Have I ever mentioned that I am the mother of four? Oh, I have? Okay then, smarty-pants readers, do you know what question I get asked the most when someone first finds out that I’ve bucked the system, birthed more than 2.5 kids* and that they range in age from 18 to 5 years old? That would be…
“Wow, really? I bet you are one busy mom!”
Well hello Captain Obvious, how astute your skills of deduction are. Then again, is there any such thing as a mom who isn’t busy? I doubt it. In my case, not only am I “one busy mom”, I am also a full-time business owner who works from home.
When I first started my business -and started seeing some checks rolling in- I said to myself…
“Self, this is one sweet gig we’ve got here. Working in yoga pants and not actually having to GO to yoga, this is the stuff of legends. We have the luxury of working from home in an office we decorated, with nary a cubicle in sight. Yeah us!”
What I failed to mention to myself was that working from home also pretty much means; Never. Leaving. Work.
There is no lunch room, no coffee run, no Girl Friday to do the billing. There is, however, laundry calling from down the hall, dishes staring up from the sink, mocking me as I take conference calls whilst trying in vain to muffle the sound of running water in the background. Where is the aforementioned “luxury” was promised?
So maybe it isn’t the most luxurious of situations, but most days it is a sweet set-up. That said, nearly everyday I miss the little things about office life. Things like adult conversation and coworker camaraderie. Yet the one thing I miss the most is a nice mid-day coffee break. That quick run to the local high-end coffee shop that was followed by a few stolen moments of caffeinated bliss over ice. Or at least that is what I used to miss. Now though, thanks to a little “Home Office” ingenuity and a dollop of COOL WHIP Whipped Topping the Coffee Break has returned!
You see, getting out of the office for a coffee run just isn’t going to happen for me. Not if I want to get everything done before the kids get home. So I’ve come up with a way to get myself the “treat” of a coffee run without having to run out and get the coffee.
Here is my recipe for taking back the Coffee Break:
Lara’s Late Afternoon Latte Break
- 1 Cup chilled coffee (any flavor will do, my fav is Hazelnut)
- 1/2 Cup Almond Milk
- 3-6 cubes frozen espresso, depending on your “perk me up” needs (I just brew that up, add sweetner to taste and pop it into ice trays)
- 2 Tbsp COOL WHIP (my current muse is the Seasonal Delight French Vanilla)
Place the espresso cubes in your favorite mug or glass, add coffee and almond milk. Top with COOL WHIP of your choosing and enjoy!
I mean it, really ENJOY it. Take some time in your busy day, no matter what it is you do, and give yourself a break. It is these little everyday things we do for ourselves that remind us we deserve something special too.
How do you enjoy the “special” in your every day?
*Really, 2.5, that was once the average number of children in the American household. How does one achieve that .5th child? Where do they come up with this stuff?
