Kids noshing on healthier candy options, well that can’t be real… can it? Actually it can be, if that candy happens to be UNREAL.
Okay, before I start to sound all Seuss and stuff, let me explain a bit. This past weekend I was challenged to bring together a group of friends and their adorable offspring, to enjoy some mingling, introduce them to tasty treats from UNREAL and see if I could convince them to Un-Junk their Halloween.
What the heck is “Un-Junk” ing? It is as simple as it sounds. Candy, without all the junk that generally accompanies Halloween treats. Fittingly, Halloween is where the UNREAL story began…
A few years ago, Michael and his 13 year old son Nicky got into an argument over Halloween candy. Nicky came home with his bag of loot, went to bed, and woke up the next morning to find that his dad had confiscated most of it. It played out the way these fights normally do, with the candy gone and Nicky going to his room.
Later, Nicky did some research online (to prove to his dad that candy isn’t so bad). He discovered that his dad was right (for once)... Read the rest of the story here.
So would my friends -more importantly their kids- dig candy made with;
- Real Cane Sugar,
- No Corn Syrup,
- Real Milk,
- No Artificial Colors or Flavors,
- No Hydrogenated Oils/Fats,
- More Cacao,
- No Artificial Preservatives,
- With More Protein and Fiber?
Most kids will eat just about anything that looks like it might remotely be candy. Grownups, on the other hand tend to be a little bit more discerning. My response, put your taste buds to the test! I purchased Milky Way, Reeses Cups, M&Ms (regular and peanut), and Snickers, removed them from their packaging and offered them up, side-by-side, with the UNREAL products and let the taste-testing begin. UNREAL won out in nearly every comparison. Naturally, there were some guests who had life-long favorites in the bunch and might need a little more persuading. For the most part, kids and adults alike, agreed that UNREAL;
- Tasted Better,
- Tasted Fresher,
- Looked almost the same, if not better than the “typical” brand.
I personally loved that they weren’t overly sweet, didn’t leave that odd “waxy” film on the roof of my mouth that some “big brand” candy does, and that they didn’t have any of those funky, obviously not occurring in natural food, colors.
The parents were even more impressed that, not only could you take the junk out of candy and still have it taste great, but that you could add in good things like more fiber and protein. While none of us agree that candy should be any higher on the Food Pyramid (though my opinion on that is subject to change according to hormone levels. TMI?) we can all agree that it feels better to hand out treats that are better for you.
