Menopause Awareness Month: Um, Why Should I Care?

Those dark circles under my eyes, they had to be smudges on the mirror. Four hours of sleep a night is normal, right? My temporal lobe has started taking the occasional sabbatical to points unknown… literally…I can’t remember crap! Was all this ‘burning the candle at both ends’ finally causing me to fall apart, or could it be something less melodramatic?

Then, my lovely mother-in-law then asked me the most shocking of questions;

“Honey, could it be Menopause?”

You have got to be joking, I’m way too young for that!

Pfft, I’m only in my EARLY forties woman, bite your tongue!

Turns out there is this thing called perimenopause… sort of like the prelude to the big show that leads to ‘no show’ <–ha, see what I did there?!

One out of three women in the U.S. suffers from the symptoms associated with perimenopause as well as the “real deal”, menopause itself. Nearly 60% of these women don’t seek treatment, whether that’s because they don’t know there is a solution or they’re just too damn busy… maybe both, I’m not sure.

What I am sure of is this: they are not alone. I am not alone. There is help for those us muddling through our days feeling bitchy one moment, weepy the next. Have an honest conversation him or her. Tell them what you’re going through, don’t marginalize it or excuse it away as just another part of this chick gig. Let your doctor help you figure out if this is a “thing” or not.
