365 Small Things

Waxing philosophical about the closing of the chapter known as 2014? Me too. Admittedly in years past I’ve been a tad bit snarky about the making of resolutions. The roots of my disdain for the public deceleration of one’s intent to “fix” things in the New Year may stem from my inability to waive away the cheese platter for more than a week. If I had a pound for every new year in which I resolved to lose weight… that would be great. Certainly better than the 10 pounds I’ve got now.

This year rather than being crotchety, contrary, or committing to resolve nothing, I’ve chose to think small.

It seems to me that the bulk of resolutions made by the masses invovle some sort of commitment to ‘Self’. While I wholeheartedly agree that I can do with innumerable improvements, I also accept that those are going to take far longer than a twelve months. Why not try looking outside myself this year?

Something I’ve noticed in my decades on this rock hurtling in orbit around a cosmic bonfire, is that it feels damn good to make other people feel good. (Not, that… come on people, lets be adults. Okay, I giggled too) The great thing about this is that it doesn’t take much. Time, money, effort… not much.

Yes, this is not the newest of ideas. Random Acts of Kinds, The Happiness Project, The Hug Tour, 100 Good Deeds, and the whole Social Good movement – all awesome, all came before me.

I tend to be a big thinker I want to do ALL. THE. THINGS. That desire eventually gets me mired down in details and – to be honest – I don’t end up getting much done. What I need some small, with a dash of that not much of any of those.

Here is the plan: find some small thing to do each and every day of 2015 that makes someone feel happy, supported, appreciated, puts a smile on their face, makes them laugh themselves into tears, or gives them that extra boost they need.

Totally. Doable.

Along the way I’ll post a few photos on Instagram using the hashtag #Small365, if you’d like to follow along… or hey JOIN IN!

Small 365 Do ONE Thing a day for someone else

If you have a really lousy day, or an epically awesome one, know someone who needs a nudge to bring out that gorgeous smile, or that quite super hero that needs a spotlight, Let me know! I will be thrilled to send along some ‘Small’.

Kicking things off early, let me start with a Thank YOU.

I’ve been spewing my random wordage all over this blog for over ten years. Some of you have been with indulged me since the very beginning. Others may just be taking their first spin on my personal tilt-a-whrill. Each and every one of you that stop by, read a post or two, leave a comment, enter a giveaway, like a pin or pic, pop in on Facebook or Tweet with me have given me a gift beyond measure – your time. For that I am thankful beyond expression. Which is saying something when we’re talking about a girl who suffers from chronic wordiness.

I’m gonna LOSE it!

Alright so maybe there is a case to be made for the fact that I may have ALREADY “lost” it several times over. The thing is for ONCE we aren’t talking about my questionable sanity. This time it’s a far more serious topic.. MY ASS! Yes darling Nuggetiers the ole hiney ain’t lookin’ so fine-y these days. In fact it’s looking more like a deformed over sized pumpkin. Ya know – like those monstrosities they use forklifts to load onto livestock scales at the county fair?

…………………Nice visual there eh?

I’m in a bad way kids. Next year I hit the big 4-oh-hell-no and though I like to think I’m pretty okay with me the stark truth is I’m not. Well at least not the me that stares back at me from the mirror and demands deep fried Twinkies dipped in chocolate. Let’s just say it.. I’m over tired, over wrinkled and over weight. I’ve resolved to do something about these things. Sleep.. marginally do-able. Botox… we’ll see. Reduce the amount of junk in the trunk… here is were I KNOW I can do something. How do I know? Well heck if it worked for Jennifer Hudson it can work for me.. right? RIGHT?! PLUS as we all know I’m a sucker for a cause and Weight Watchers has hooked me with a great one… Loose-A-Palooza!

  • Lose-A-Palooza is a one-day social media event created to encourage participation in the Lose For Good® campaign to benefit Share Our Strength and Action Against Hunger.
  • As part of the Lose For Good campaign, Weight Watchers will donate $1, up to a maximum of $60,000, to Share Our Strength and Action Against Hunger for each approved mention, acknowledgment or action related to “Lose  For Good” made on September 14th through blogs, Twitter, Facebook and  check-in via foursquare.

I’ve vowed to join them in raising money and awareness while reducing the size of my PANTS… and bras, TMI?

Seriously though gang when you think about it most of us mom types (and dads too) spend so much of our time focusing on the external things in our lives. Kids, community, work, pets, family, relationships… blah blah blah. We often make excuses for why we don’t do things for ourselves. As the tag line of a popular beauty product says, “I’m worth it”.. and I am.. SO ARE YOU!

I’d love to have you join me in Lose For Good and Lose-A-Palooza! Start by making a difference just by getting “social media” with it tomorrow. Then stop by A CNOW Life over there I’ll be doing a series of video blogs, product features and pathetic emotional confessions in the next few weeks as I launch the site and hopefully launch my butt into a smaller pair of gut compressing jeggings!

Talkin’ Trash

How many of you are going to buy someone a gift this holiday season? I’d wager at least a FEW of you are (we won’t count Ed he’s a Grinch). When you’re out stalking sales, trudging through traffic and spending crazy amounts of cash how much thought goes into the impact of your gift BEYOND the unwrapping frenzy?

I’ll admit it here, for the six people who read my blog world to read, that I don’t generally think much about the global impact of gifting. I’m sort of a grab and go girl. Which I think is understandable if not excusable, as I have a gaggle of offspring to shop for. Yet in the back of my harried brain is that inner hippie my parents raised me to be. NO  she is not smoking wacky tabacky and doing Hatha Yoga (Mari!). She is my own personal Jiminy Cricket and sometimes something comes along that lets her shine.

This time that something also lets my inner Heidi Klum out.. YES Mrs. Seal lives in my brain.. what you think that’s odd or something? Well then YOU haven’t been around here long, have ya?! Heidi and Jiminy were so excited when I got the opportunity to review products from XS Project.

Simply put XS Project is were chic and cause come together in the perfect mix of function, form, fashion and philanthropy.

The minds behind the project saw the problem..

80,000 tons of flexible plastic packaging is manufactured each year in Indonesia

They heard the plight of those in need
There are an estimated 350,000 – 450,000 trash pickers in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Most of them undocumented and living on a monthly income of aboutUS$ 30 to 35 per family.
They found the right creative and passionate mind
Visual artist and environmental activist Ann Wizer, who conceived of this initiative in the mid-90s while living in the Philippines.

And they brought it all together to build the XSProject Foundation. Dedicated to enriching the lives of artisans, the concept is to provide jobs for those with few income generating opportunities. The project is ever evolving, working with new designs, materials and concepts.

I was provided with this pen case, that my 10 year old tween age fashionista daughter has already laid claim to

What struck me first about it is that there was NO way I could ever tell that it was made from post consumer materials let alone plucked from a trash pile in Jakarta! She LOVED the color and the tag sewn onto the case that states “This product is handmade from waste collected by Jakarta’s TRASH PICKERS“. She is a budding Eco-Chic diva and you would have thought I’d handed her Prada!
The XS Project  also sent me this great notebook cover

which will adorn The Nuggets daily planner, aka keeper of the keys to the Nuggetdom and the ONLY reason I ever get ANYTHING done (not that it’s EVER on time). The hard surface will provide an instant writing table anytime one of my BRILLIANT schemes pops into my brain, and the lovely colors will make it easy to find in the bottomless pit that has consumed my work desk!
So back to the gift giving idea.. imagine that you bought say.. your FAVORITE Mom who blogs this lovely   “Market Market” tote
NOT only would you be giving her a CHIC and ECO friendly gift.. you’d be giving the gift of self reliance and a shot at financial security to a family a world away but with the same hopes and dreams that you have for your own family. Simply put, buying something from The XS Project Shop will be a gift for more than just the recipient. PLUS I she will look SO FREAKIN’ HIP!
The kind people of XS Project and Tellem Worldwide have teamed up to bring the gift that gives and GIVES MORE to a lucky Nuggetier. Riddle me THIS to win..(aka answer any one of the following questions in the comments section to get an entry. One entry per answer, one answer per comment.. SO answer all 3 questions in 3 SEPARATE comments and get 3 entries!  confusing enough?). And since the best way to help the project grow is to get the word out, everyone who tweets a link to the SHOP page of the Project XS website gets 3 MORE entries (be sure to include @dipaolamomma in your tweet or publish the link in the comments).
Question 1: Why is the manufacturing and use of plastic drink pouches on the rise in Indonesia?
Question 2: What are the two most important interconnected goals of the project manufacturing?

Question 3: What is your PERSONAL favorite item in the shop?

Contest in open to US residents only. Ends Monday December 7th at 10 pm EST.  Winner will be announced on or about Tuesday December 8th.

How about this… Did you know that Oscar Mayer has a new program debuting on September 9th where they will be partnering with Kids Cafe a program that provides free snacks and meals to low-income children via Feeding America? It’s a great easy way to do something good for YOUR kids and for kids in need. You simply make a promise to put a note in your child’s lunch. Comments for a Cause

Nuggetiers today I bring you all a great opportunity to do something to help the thousands of American families who go hungry everyday. ShopRite has created “Blog It Forward To Fight Hunger” to engage others in the fight against hunger through blogging. They’ve enlisted my help to get the word out. Bloggers In Caring, is a program that is part of ShopRite’s continuing efforts to raise awareness about the issue of hunger. For the past 10 years, the ShopRite Partners In Caring program has donated $2 million annually to local food banks – $20 million to date. In these troubled economic times, there is more need for food assistance than ever in our communities. Here in Maryland alone the need has become almost epidemic. In my native state of California food banks are falling far short of the stock they need to fill the demands of an ever growing need.

ShopRite has teamed up with bloggers and General Mills to provide boxes for comments. They will donate 30 boxes of cereal to a food bank in the ShopRite trading area if I can get at least 30 comments on this post by August 13th. Let’s show them that we can AND TRIPLE that! If I can get 90 comments I will personally donate 10 boxes of cereal to my local food bank. To sweeten the deal Cheerios will be featuring the bloggers who meet their goals on the back of a Honey Nut Cheerios box. If my mug makes it there I will give 5 of those boxes away to Nuggetiers. With the understanding that you’ll circle my picture and get it custom framed in a gilt mirror made of petrified Chicken Nuggets. Okay so maybe that’s a little too gross. But bloggers helping families in need is a great thing and I hope that The Nuggetiers will answer the call.

Do your part in your community too. Contact your local food bank to see how you can help.
